Emergency Food

Emergency food supplies are critical for surviving an emergency situation. Without food and water, surviving more than 48 hours could prove to be fatal in many cases. For this reason, experts recommend having at least 72 hours worth of food available for just such an emergency.

Emergency food supplies should be made up of non-perishable food items. Foods that do not require refrigeration or preparation are ideal for these emergency stores. Canned meats, fruits and vegetables are all highly recommended.

When putting together an emergency food supply, it is wise to avoid salty foods. Salt can increase the body’s need for water, and in an emergency, water is a valuable commodity. It is also important that a can opener be kept with the food supply, because canned food doesn’t do you any good if you can’t get to it.
